Sit, Savor & Make Memories.
In 1932, a camp was purchased on Mascoma Lake by Joseph and Angelina DePalo. They spent summers and weekends enjoying water sports and extended family-time on the lake. Their youngest daughter, Gloria, began dating Bill Beattie of White River Jct, VT, in high school. During their courtship they often visited Doc’s, (now the Baited Hook). Shortly after high school graduation, in 1950, they married. Life moved them around New England, but Mascoma Lake was always an anchor in their lives.
In 1986, Patty and Chris Carroll opened a casual dining restaurant and named it The Baited Hook. They opened seasonally, serving up seafood, burgers, and a great atmosphere, with beautiful views of Mascoma Lake. Joseph and Angelina’s grandchildren enjoyed working summers in the kitchen, welcoming their Beattie cousins upon visits to the lake.
Bill and Gloria continued the tradition of Mascoma Lake summers, visiting Gloria’s parents and brothers at the lake. In 1987, Bill and Gloria, along with their sons, Bill and Scott, purchased a house two doors down from Great-Grammy Angelina. New generations of Beattie kids learned to swim, water-ski and barefoot ski on Mascoma Lake. Beattie and DePalo cousins reunited summer after summer catching up on each others’ lives, enjoying good food, ice cream, and creating new memories at The Baited Hook.
In 1995, Bill and Gloria purchased Great-Grammy’s house and moved back to the lake permanently. Their grandson, Little Billy, and his wife, honeymooned at Bill and Gloria’s home in June 1995. Mascoma Lake held special memories for them as well. They followed Bill and Gloria’s footsteps taking a walk to get an ice cream cone during their dating days.
Little Billy continued the tradition and brought his growing family to Mascoma Lake to spend time making memories, and in 2000 purchased property near The Baited Hook. Their four children enjoyed many chicken O’s at “The Hook” as they took a break from swimming, boating and skiing. They would play “Baited Hook” on their own deck, opening a window, pretending to take orders, and calling out numbers for order pick up as young children.
As The Baited Hook began to be open fewer hours, the Beattie family began dreaming about the possibility of operating it themselves. They missed sharing a meal around the table on the deck between ski runs, running down for an ice cream before the campfire, seeing family and friends from the lake there, and feeling at home when they entered “The Hook”. These conversations happened multiple years until in June of 2020, on a visit to celebrate Bill and Gloria’s 70th wedding anniversary, they reached out to Patty and Chris to see if it was a possibility. Having been frequent customers, business associates, and neighbors, the families knew each other fairly well. What began as an idea became a reality.
Family is most important to the Beatties. They feel a strong connection to Mascoma Lake and recognize the importance it has played in their family over 5 generations. They look to continue to provide a place where you and your family can sit, savor and make memories at The Baited Hook on Mascoma Lake.
